OUR MISSION: The mission of the Helping Hand Cemetery Club (HHCC) of Courtland, Virginia is to improve and maintain the cemetery (HHC) as a peaceful and beautiful place worthy of its State historic recognition. Helping Hand Cemetery is an important  link to the legacy and history of the African and Native American community of Courtland, Virginia and is the vehicle through which most of this community's history is shared. HHCC will continue to study the history and engage the community in educational events. HHCC's mission is also to honor all interred, especially its military and previously "unknown" buried without identification.  In addition, we promote the sales of plots and burial rights therein.

A Message from the Board President

Hello Family & Friends,

As we embark on a new year, I would like to thank many of you for your support through your yearly dues, donations, contributions, and volunteer efforts at the Helping Hand Cemetery. We have made our cemetery a state historical site, made many repairs, lots of aesthetic improvements, and have maintained the grounds to instill pride in all who visit. Still, there is a lot more that needs to be done.

Having said that, we must continue to grow our support by inviting and encouraging additional family and friends to help.

The following is how you can support one of the largest African-American independent cemeteries in Southampton County, a cemetery that has been historically recognized by the State of Virginia.

• Explore the website (helpinghandcemeteryclub.com) to learn what we have accomplished with your support.

• Share this information with your family and friends. Collect and submit family contact information to [email protected]. Let them know that we will contact them to provide information on how to support Helping Hand Cemetery.

• Encourage family members and friends to become members of our Helping Hand Cemetery Club, an organization created over one hundred years ago. To become a member, all that is required is a yearly tax-deductible donation of $60.00. Members receive quarterly newsletters and invitations to all Club activities. Membership fees are used for maintenance upkeep only.

• Volunteers are always needed for our clean-up projects and on-site programs.           You can either participate in-person or donate to the projects.
